Cheapest places to stay for vacation in San Diego?

Question

Me and a friend of mine are going to San Diego on the 1st through the 6th and we're trying to find a place to stay Hotel, Motel, Hostel whatever. Anyone know what the best deal would be? I'm more interested in specific places. We really don't care the quality, it just has to be a place we could stay at night, we'll probably be out and about during the whole day on the days we'll be there.

I would stay at Banana Bungalow ... it's right on the beach, overlooking the boardwalk in Pacific Beach. The hostel is a stones throw away from the beach. There are restaurants and clubs in the area so you won't have to worry about driving. It's definitely the cheapest way to go since the hotels are capitalizing on the summer tourist season.

Here are a couple of options not mentioned, There are some real cheap nasty motels on PCH, the military boys/girls use them alot for "booty calls" while off duty. Also not mentioned is the craiglist option, there is a category there for rooms for rent, you might want to try there. As a former San Diegan, I'd stay awat from Chula Vista, El Cajon, National City areas. There are quite a few hotels/motels in the Hotel Circle/Fashion Valley areas, some are quite pricey, I dont know how much the Motel6, Super 8 types are in San Diego.

It is hard to figure out the cheapest places because you know the price depends on weekend or weekdays or special event and season, but usually Econo lodge, some chain inns and motels often give very low price. But make sure they are away from the beach area.
