We are staying in downtown San Diego at the double tree... what is the best 2 beaches? I heard Coronodo is a awesome one, but what are your opinions? Its going to be 2 kids (4 and 7) and all of us who are 21-27 so we want somewhere fun.

I can travel too we have a car.. Is la jolla nice? I want the kids to find those little tide pools.. and I heard la jolla is the place to go for that cause of the rocks and stuff?

Coronado is definitely one of the best, and it's only a few minutes from Downtown. Since you have young kids Mission beach might be fun because of the rollercoaster/rides and games, but it's definitely not a quiet relaxing beach.

La Jolla (shores) is a great family beach - no drunks or gangster wannabees like there can be in Mission beach, but parking can be hard to find, and you have to get there early on the weekends. La Jolla cove has the caves and the childrens pool where there are seals relaxing on the beach.

If you want tidepools, the ones in Point Loma (the ranger at the station at Cabrillo national monument can point you there) are the best in the county.

Some of the best beaches are ones that you won't see in the tourist handouts. Torrey pines is a beautiful beach with hiking trails and awesome views up on top of the cliffs. Moonlight beach is about 1/2 hour up the coast in Encinitas, but it's a great family beach known mostly to the locals. The drive up the PCH takes you along side some of the best beaches in the county - Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas, Leucadia. If you have the time, I suggest driving up PCH and check out some of the more scenic, less touristy/crowded beaches.

Coronado, La Jolla is the best!!!

And if you want fun for the kids, Pay and go to the Silver Strand Beach Park, and over to the Bay.

Mission Beach, you can rent all kinds of toys to play with.

La Jalla, will just knock your socks off, and has great bars, real close to the beach, and a Ramada INN real close, get a room for the day and hang out there, in La Jolla it's 100.oo a night/day for a real nice clean room, the kids can relax, you'll have a place to change your clothes, and wake up their or the kids can nap, so can the adults, and you can sohwer before you go back downtown!!!! That's what i would do, take turns watching the kids, and be sure to go thru the caves from the gift shop down to thru the cove, and buy shells and lot's of post cards, and mail one to yourself for a memory of a lifetime!

Try Ocean Beach. It has tide pools for the kids and it is a young adult hangout with funky shops and affordable restaurants and bars. La Jolla is cool but not as fun.

I love Coronado and La Jolla beach. I believe they are the cleanest out of all the beaches in SD. If you want to take the kids to a fun beach, take them to Mission Beach because they have games and rollercoasters for them.
